Replay Trader

Paper trading means trading with fake money under real market conditions: you pick entries, set stops and track profit and loss exactly as you would with a live account — except a mistake costs you nothing. It's how professional traders test new strategies and how beginners should spend their first months, long before real money is on the line.

Replay Trader is a free crypto paper trading simulator with a twist that makes practice dramatically faster: instead of waiting for live markets, you paper trade on replayed historical charts, so you can compress months of trading into one session.

What is paper trading, exactly?

The name comes from the pre-internet practice of writing trades down on paper instead of sending them to a broker. A modern paper trading account gives you:

What it doesn't give you: real slippage under stress, and the emotions of losing actual money. That's fine — paper trading is for building skill and process. You graduate to small real size once your paper results are consistently positive.

Why paper trade on historical replay instead of live markets?

Most paper trading apps (TradingView, Webull, thinkorswim, Binance testnet) run on live data. That's realistic but painfully slow: one valid setup might appear per day, so it takes months to gather enough trades to judge yourself.

Paper trading on chart replay fixes the speed problem:

  1. You're dropped at a random, hidden moment in real market history.
  2. You advance candle by candle and trade what you see — no hindsight possible.
  3. A session that covers weeks of price action takes minutes.
  4. You finish with a stats summary: P&L, win rate, number of trades.

Fifty practice trades on replay teach you more than five on a live demo — and both are free. For the full method, read how to practice trading.

How to paper trade properly (5 rules)

  1. Trade a defined strategy, not vibes. Pick one setup — e.g. an EMA crossover or breakout strategy — and take only those trades.
  2. Use realistic position sizing. Risk 1–2% of the virtual account per trade, exactly as you would live.
  3. Always set the stop before the entry. If you can't say where you're wrong, you don't have a trade.
  4. Log every trade. Wins, losses, and why you took them. The Replay Trader mobile apps include a built-in trade journal.
  5. Judge yourself on 50+ trades, not 5. Small samples are noise. Replay makes large samples fast.

FAQ

Is paper trading free?

On Replay Trader, yes — unlimited and without an account. Some broker paper accounts require sign-up (Webull, Interactive Brokers, thinkorswim) but are also free.

Does paper trading actually help?

Yes, with one caveat. It builds the mechanical and analytical skills — reading charts, timing entries, managing risk — which are most of trading. It can't fully reproduce the emotions of real losses, so the standard path is: paper trade until consistently profitable, then start live with very small size.

How long should I paper trade before going live?

Think in trades, not time: most traders should complete at least 50–100 paper trades of a single strategy with a positive result before risking real money. With chart replay you can get there in weeks instead of a year.

Can I paper trade crypto without an exchange account?

Yes. Replay Trader runs entirely in your browser on historical Binance data — you never connect an exchange account or deposit anything.
